recent installations

When we look at the fifty years of Milenko Matanovic’s art, two equally prominent aspects stand out: work within an (art) collective and the artist’s prevalent creative approach. In both, a harmonious relationship with the environment and the concept of the community as the fundamental node of spiritual dimensions play a crucial role.

In the Spring of 2018, Milenko was invited to hold a retrospective exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art is Ljubljana: WAVES - 50 years of Milenko Matanovič’s Art. Works were displayed from the OHO and Pomegranate years, selections of his ‘art fitness’ watercolors and inks, as well as six new installations by Milenko.

Zdenka Badovinac, Director of the Moderna galerija, writes: (as excerpted from the exhibit’s catalogue):

“A big part of the exhibition is dedicated to the artist’s current solo work, inspired by our invitation and realized for this occasion. A new series of installations will show how Matanovic’s post-OHO art practice would have progressed had he continued in that vein…This presentation is distinguished by the artist’s unequivocal, precise statement, coupled with attention dedicated also to his earlier works, especially certain hitherto less noted aspects of his artistic output from his student period to the present.”

the exhibit

Returning to his early principle of creating something original for museum spaces, he created these installations using simple materials: rocks (left over from the previous exhibit), plywood, cables, metal rods, string, tar paper, Christmas lights, and chopsticks.

One wall consisted of the image of a dragon, the symbol of Ljubljana, and was created from the fingerprints of over 70 of the visitors to the exhibit.
